The Waterfront continues to move forward as the Redondo Beach City Council gives its stamp of approval to the lease agreement. Financial analyses presented at City Council meeting found that The Waterfront has the “right mix and ratio of tenants” and that CenterCal looks like it will have sufficient financing. Further, the City will benefit from increased tax revenues, rent from CenterCal and more than $100 million in infrastructure improvements funded by CenterCal.

The 3D model of The Waterfront has permanently moved to its new home at 239 N. Harbor Drive in Redondo Beach. The model’s new location is located on the site of the future development project and is available for residents to explore at various times throughout the week.

After months of searching for the perfect location to bring the 16-by-7 foot 3D model of The Waterfront closer to the Redondo Beach community, CenterCal has signed a lease for a local venue on North Harbor Drive. The space is located at the heart of where CenterCal plans to develop The Waterfront, offering residents the opportunity “to look at the model and then look out the window and say this is where that building will be.” The display space is expected to be ready by the end of the month.

Measure C will head to the ballot this March as a challenge to the current waterfront redevelopment project. Unlike The Waterfront, which will pay for $100 million in infrastructure costs, Measure C, if passed, will replace The Waterfront with a smaller project estimated to cost taxpayers over $200 million, including $25 million for a swimming pool to replace Seaside Lagoon and $10 million for a boat launch ramp.

After an eight hour hearing, the Redondo Beach City Council upheld the Harbor Commission decision to approve The Waterfront. The approved motion included requests by the Council for the downsizing/removal of one of the project buildings, as well as weekly water testing for Seaside Lagoon in the first year. According to Public Development Director Aaron Jones, The Waterfront “will provide significant enhancements to public open space on the site, turning parking lots into promenades.”

The Waterfront was passed in the early morning hours of the October 18th Redondo Beach City Council hearing. Following eight hours of testimony and presentations, public comment and councilmember deliberation, the City Council voted 3 - 1 to uphold the project’s approval by the Harbor Commission. The Coastal Commission is anticipated to review the project within the next few months.

On Monday, August 8, The Redondo Beach Harbor Commission voted to approve the Final Environmental Impact Report and Conditional Use Permit for The Waterfront. Upon reviewing the 12,000 page Final Environmental Impact Report, asking exhaustive questions and listening to public comment, the majority of the Commissioners were pleased with the changes they made to the project and voted to move forward with revitalizing the waterfront.

The Waterfront is now one step closer towards revitalization after the Redondo Beach Harbor Commission voted to approve the proposed project on Monday, August 8. The vote followed seven and a half hours of detailed discussion among the Harbor Commissioners and extensive public input. The project’s next step will be to go before the California Coastal Commission, unless it is appealed to the Redondo Beach City Council.
